Day 1 Arrive in Malawi
Upon arrival into Lilongwe, you are greeted at the airport and transfered by coach to Monkey Bay on beautiful Lake Malawi (4 hours). You have a welcome dinner and settle in to your surroundings.
Day 2 Cultural immersion and village visits
Meet a member of the youth group and begin your visit at a boatyard. Gain an insight into the traditional art of wooden boat building before heading into the village.
Spend time visiting a traditional household, dropping in on the women’s empowerment group, and visiting the local chief. Complete your morning by having a local lunch with one of the youth group’s families. In the afternoon, work with the youth group on home based care activities.
Day 3-5 Building a medical clinic
For the next three days we work alongside the local community to build a much needed medical clinic. This community are part of the Yao Ethnic Group and students will get a chance to learn more about traditional Malawian Village life, sample some local food and interact with the local youth group.
Each day you will travel 15 minutes by bus to your project site, returning around 5.00pm. This promises to be the highlight of your trip, and your students will bond together.
Day 6 Boat trip and snorkeling and cultural performance
If only one pleasure trip is to be taken, it should be out to the Lake Malawi National Park. Brightly coloured fish are easily visible through the crystal clear water, and are eager to swarm round, and feed from, any hand placed in the water holding a piece of bread or biscuit.
When we return to the hotel, we cap off a spectacular week with a cultural performance showcasing traditional dance and song. The chief of the village will join you to thank you for your efforts and the clinic will be officially opened.
Day 7 Departure
After breakfast, depart to Lilongwe airport for your flight out.
